Monroe County is named for "James Monroe," the fifth President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. Monroe County was formed from La Crosse County in March of 1854 with Sparta serving as the county seat. According to the 2023 Census Bureau, Monroe County has a population of 46,399.
Monroe County is currently divided into 16 districts with a representative on the County Board for each district. Supervisors stand for election every two years to represent their district. At the beginning of each new term, the board elects a Chair and Vice-Chair of the Monroe County Board.
