Marriage licenses are only done by appointment Monday-Friday 8:15-11:15. Please schedule an appointment by calling our office: 608-269-8705.

You need to have a wedding date decided upon prior to scheduling your appointment. We do not schedule courthouse weddings. See "Monroe County Judge Contacts" below to schedule with them.

FAQs

Can I apply for my license in any Wisconsin county?

Yes, Wisconsin allows you to apply in any county. You do not need to travel to the county in which you are getting married to apply for your license.
Can the 4-day waiting period be waived?

Although a 4-day waiting period is required, this may be waived for a good cause by the County Clerk for an additional fee of $25.00. Under no conditions can the waiting period be waived if under the age of 18.
Do both parties need to be present for the appointment?

Yes, both parties need to be present to provide signatures on multiple documents.
How do I change my name?

After you have received your certificate from the County Deeds office, you need to contact the social security office. The nearest to Monroe County is in La Crosse, Wi: 210 7^th Street S. (800) 772-1213 https://www.ssa.gov/personal-record/change-name

Once you’ve changed your name with the social security office, contact your local DMV.
How long is a marriage license good for?

A license is good for 60 days from the issuance date.
I am from a different country or was born in a different county, what do I need to know to get married?

I am from a different state, where do I apply?

You can apply at any County Clerk office in Wisconsin. The marriage may then be performed in Wisconsin.
I’m married, what do I do now?

You have 3 days to get your license turned in to a County Deeds office in Wisconsin. You can turn it in, or your officiant can turn it in. If your officiant turns it in then you or your spouse will need to go to that office to pick up the certificate. You will need to bring identification to obtain that certificate and it will cost $20.00 for one copy- an additional $3.00 for any extra copies after that.
I’ve been divorced. What do I need to know before getting married again?

There is a 6-month waiting period from the final date of divorce before you may reapply. When you come to the appointment to apply to be married again, you need to bring your final divorce documents which will include the judge’s signature and date of divorce.
Is there a waiting period?

A 4-day waiting period is required by law before the license can be issued. Please plan ahead and attempt to make an appointment at least 4-days to one week before the ceremony.
What are the fees?

Cash or check only. The fee for the marriage license is $100.00 in Monroe County. If eligible for a waiver, the additional fee is $25.00.
