Monroe County Dog Control Department

NOTICE:  Effective Monday, June 1, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Monroe County building access will change.

In an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Monroe County asks the public to continue to use remote options such as the Monroe County website, phone, email, and mail for all business that they are able. Monroe County Department contact listing can be found under the Quick Links on the Monroe County webpage.

Please do not visit county facilities if you are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19, cough, fever, chills, sore throat, fatigue or body aches, difficulty breathing, loss of smell or taste, or you have recently been around anyone known to have or suspected of having COVID-19

If you need to meet with a county department you are asked to call ahead and make an appointment to limit the number of people in waiting areas.

All visitors are encouraged to wear masks and social distance while conducting county business on site.

Dog Shelter: Open to public with appointments encouraged.  Dog Control Dept. Office: 14345 Co Hwy B, Sparta Pick up dog license applications from entrance door holder outside or off website below.  All residents needing to drop mail or make payments may use the secure drop box on the porch, available at all hours.

Dog License Requirements:

Any dog that is kept on your property or is in your possession for more than 30 days and is at least 5 months of age is required to be licensed by Monroe County. This license must be renewed annually.  License must be obtained and/or renewed by March 31 of the license year. An additional $15 late fee will be assessed for each license purchased after March 31, of the current license year.

License fees for 2020 are:

  • $27 for male or female unaltered dogs ($42.00 After March 31)
  • $12 for spayed or neutered dogs ($27.00 After March 31)

To obtain a license you must provide proof at the time of licensing that the dog has a current rabies vaccination from a certified veterinarian. Your veterinarian must also provide proof of spaying or neutering.
